I surprised that you have rode the train in Indonesia, I am one of the lover train last 2 months I and my wife were driving train from Medan to Kisaran vv, The max. train speed only 60 km/hr, The return train took about 5 hrs for 130 km (Kisaran Medan)because the head (Diesel loco) got brake problems.
I am collecting the trains photos from the Internet gallery i found , the train development in Indonesia very slow compare with other Asean countries

So, why would teaching ESL in Indonesia be considered a 'gap year' activity only? Quite a myopic view in my opinion.

There are plenty of individuals who teach for reasons other than to fill a gap year, and I would offer that they are, on the whole, better teachers than the average 23 year old looking for a temporary way to survive a gap year in indonesia. Most people cant save money in 1st world countries, and so whats the difference if they work at a job where they cant save much in Indonesia? Other than a probable better standard of living, for the money, than in the west.

Unless you measure your life in material goods accumulated, there is no reason to diminish esl teaching in Indonesia. You cant take it with you anyhow, and many of these teachers would rather live a more exciting life teaching abroad than "measure up" to societies ridiculous standards of material success, while sacrificing their freedom in the process.

Indonesia esl is comparable to ESL in many other countries, all which emply lifelong esl teachers.

That's not true, my maid was not abused or anything else, she ran away because she want to go back to indonesia, she has been telling me that she misses her children and family badly...she know very well that if she goes back to the agent she will not be able to go back to indonesia so she went to the police and asked the police to send her to the consulate so she could be deported back to indonesia and because she left after the guarantee period, after 6 months, i have no replacement...the agent just wash their hands clean and said there's nothing they can do...

I booked hotel once in the counter for my family of my wife when they arrive in arrival international terminal. They do give discount and it is almost sure cheaper than if you book by yourself with the hotel.

Nice to know that Bukit Lawang is still going. I had heard about the flooding that decimated the village and feared it may never recover. Having visited there around 15 years ago I remember it being a charming and lovely place.

Ten years does seem a little extreme for that amount but I'm sure it's just the governments way of trying to clamp down and hopefully prevent future drug use.

Something has to be done about this kind of mistreatment - does the government not want to protect them?
